If you ask the Beliebers (that is, Justin Bieber loyal fans), Justin Bieber can do no wrong, even at those times when he’s caught urinating in mop buckets in restaurants, arrested on suspicion of DUI and drag racing, and offending other fans by comparing himself to Michael Jackson and saying he was persecuted.

Still, Justin knows that he’s been acting like a major douche, to borrow Naya Rivera’s very accurate description, and for that he’s sorry. For as much as he’s been in the news for more than a year and a half, Justin has not been doing any public appearances: that changed the other day, on Ellen.

Justin is sorry, very awkward

You can see his appearance in the first video below. Justin comes across as (and admits to being) very nervous because he has not done any TV appearances in a very long time. He also fails to properly engage with Ellen save for a few one-word answers, and appears to be quite uncomfortable.

In short, he seems overwhelmed. For someone who’s been in the public eye for such a long time and who has never taken a moment’s break from the spotlight, this is highly unlikely, so when word of how awkward he was during the taping got out online, everyone assumed the worst.

In reality, Justin was probably just nervous: after all, this is the first time that he directly addresses in any way all the stupid things he’s done, all of which will most likely turn into excellent joke material for his Comedy Central roast, which is scheduled to air precisely on his 21st birthday.

“I think it’s just cool to be able to laugh at yourself so. I’ve done some things. That might not of been the greatest,” he tells Ellen. “I just want to be able to, ya know. And kind of just kind own up to some of the things.”

What he’s saying is that he’s grown up and he’s ready to look back and say, yes, I acted like a fool and I’m sorry and I learned my lesson.

Second apology video sheds more light

While fans were still wondering online what Justin was apologizing for, he posted a second apology video on his Facebook page. He still doesn’t say what he’s so sorry about, but he talks about the Ellen taping and how he felt as if people were judging him.

“I just wanted to make a video because I wanted to express how I feel right now,” he says. “It’s been a minute since I’ve been in a public appearance, and I didn’t want to come off arrogant or conceited or basically how I’ve been acting the past year and a half.”

“I felt like people were judging me,” he continues, “and I really want people to know how much I care, how much I care about people, and how I’m not that person to say, ‘I don’t give a [expletive],’ you know? I’m not that kid. I’m a person who genuinely cares. And although what’s happened in the past has happened, I just want to make the best impression on people and be kind and loving and gentle and soft. And although people can call me a ‘softy,’ that’s how my mom raised me.”

So it turns out that Justin is really apologizing for his irresponsible and downright annoying behavior over the past year and a half, in the hope that he would win back some of the fans he alienated with it, while also earn new ones by showing the maturity required to own up to his mistakes and apologize.

Besides the roast, Justin Bieber is also said to have a new album coming out, which is to say he needs as much public good will as we can spare. Do you believe him?
