The EC3 pool of threat intelligence gets bigger and bigger

Europol's European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) is getting stronger and stronger as the organization announced on Thursday that it signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with McAfee, which is now part of Intel Security.

The purpose of the partnership is to combine the intelligence and expertise from Intel Security with the law enforcement skills of EC3. This agreement is designed to help take down cybercriminal campaigns, as well as to share best practices.

The law enforcement organization is not at the first partnership of this kind, as its list also includes companies as Kaspersky and Mnemonic, as well as the public partnership for cyber-security training and education in Norway, the Center for Cyber and Information Security (CCIS).

Raj Samani, chief technology officer for EMEA at Intel Security said that the level of criminality in the digital world has grown beyond the defense abilities of a single entity; as such, a partnership between multiple organizations involved in cyber security would lead to more efficient actions against cybercriminals.

“Today we add the resources of Intel Security to our list of capabilities dedicated to protecting our digital lives. This task cannot be done by law enforcement alone, and requires a much broader approach. Intel Security has assisted the European Cybercrime Centre (EC3) in the past and, with the signing of this MoU, our cooperation will continue to the benefit of all law-abiding users of the Internet and to the disadvantage of cybercriminals,” said Troel Oerting, head of the EC3.

Intel Security brings to the table security solutions based on hardware components and its own information about digital threats. At the end of the day, information from the security company identifies the threat actors and EC3 proceeds to arresting them.
