Infamous: Second Son developer Sucker Punch Productions believes that the engine used in the recent title has unlimited potential as the team has a lot to learn about wrangling the PS4 hardware until it can make the most of its power.

Infamous: Second Son delighted millions of PS4 owners from all over the world when it appeared on the Sony console last spring. Besides introducing quite a lot of gameplay mechanics and additions to the Infamous recipe, the title also had some stellar visuals that took advantage of the new-generation console.

However, while the graphics were certainly impressive, Sucker Punch Productions' Visual Effects Artist Matt Vainio confirms, via DualShockers, that the engine employed by the studio doesn't feature an actual limit to what it can do.

Sucker Punch's engine is limitless, according to the developer

He expects that visuals on console games are going to improve over time, just as they did on the last generation of consoles. He exemplified this statement with Bethesda's The Elder Scrolls series, which saw Oblivion and Skyrim appear on the same platforms with drastically different graphics.

"There's no real limit to the engine. The limits of the hardware are kind of odd in that, if you think about consoles, the best games for the console always come out near the end, so I suspect it's going to be the same for us as well," he explains.

"You start to learn better ways to use the hardware. If you look at screenshots from something like Oblivion. If you look at Oblivion next to Skyrim. Those both came out on the PS3 and on the Xbox 360, and if you look at the screenshots of those two games, just comparing them even on the same console, drastically different look."

As such, Vainio is confident that the engine will be able to produce even better-looking games in the future, so fans can look forward to great visuals once Sucker Punch is ready to present its next projects.

As of yet, the studio has only rolled out Second Son on the PS4 and its Infamous: First Light standalone expansion on the platform.
