Our Incoming 2015 series focuses on the most important game launches of the next 12 months and next up we talk about Homefront: The Revolution.

What we know

Homefront: The Revolution is a big bet for Kock Media and Deep Silver because it aims to take a universe that was not very well received by the shooter fan community and basically revamp it from the ground up, introducing an open world structure and a more gritty approach to the storytelling.

The Dambuster studio is handling development work and wants to tell a story set in 2029, when Philadelphia, the city which saw the first sparks of the American Revolution, is captured by the Korean People’s Army and is used as a propaganda center.

The US is still fighting against the invaders but the situation is dire and a small group of citizens try to use guerrilla tactics and low-tech solutions to take on the superior enemy and persuade them to abandon the city.

The biggest gameplay change is the fact that the city, as modelled in the new Homefront, is an open world that can be explored at will, although some areas will be harder to penetrate than others.

The title will use classic shooter mechanics but it wants to introduce innovation when it comes to crafting, with players asked to scavenge equipment that can be later used to modify the features of a weapon even in the middle of a firefight.

Launch is set to take place on the PlayStation 4, the Xbox One and the PC.

Why it matters

Homefront: The Revolution will serve as a test case for the impact that a name has on the way a video game is received.

Dambuster might deliver a solid title that is dragged down by the fact that the initial release was limited in scope, both in terms of narrative and gameplay.

At the same time, the open world and improved crafting might be enough to draw in shooter fans who are intrigued by the possibility of playing an expanded take on the classic Red Dawn formula, even if it is set in a major urban area rather than a quite small town.
