UAViators is creating a social network for the experienced

Unmanned aerial vehicles are excellent means to reach places where no man has gone before, or where man used to go before but no longer does due to it being a danger to their health. UAViators wants to get everyone in the world in on it.

Aerial drones like quadcopters can do everything from acting as a vessel for hobbyists to finding stranded people and exploring ruins.

They can also send the White House into a panic if, say, someone pilots them into the grounds at 3 am in the morning. Or they could until a few weeks ago, when someone actually did it and led to a revision of the security on the grounds.

A nonprofit organization called UAViators wants to put drones around the world to the best possible use, so they decided to pool all available resources into one big think tank.

Search and rescue operations are the situations where drones of all sorts can show their mettle. So long as you have a good remote controller and a camera mounted on the drone to get around, you can get through pretty much every nook if you're careful.

UAViators is using Ning, a platform for the creation of social networks on the fly, as well as Google Docs, in order to enlist people from around the world in rescue missions.

They are still setting things up, so there are no missions available yet, but it won't be long now. This is just the next level of what has been happening for the past few years.

Which is to say, calls to action and aid groups have been using drones in crisis areas for years. Now, an organized network spanning the whole world will allow more people to get involved.

UAViators already has FAA approval for the idea, and the rules for using commercial drones under the terms of the agreement are fairly flexible, and detailed enough that participants will know no-fly-zones from the rest easily.

How to get involved in this effort

If you feel like helping your fellow man, you can sign up with UAViators right now. That done, you will be on call for when an emergency situation may occur in your area.
