Q4OS is a Linux distribution built to offer a desktop experience similar to that of Windows XP. The developers are preparing to launch version 1.0 and they have made quite a few changes.

There are numerous ways of making your Linux distro look like a Windows counterpart, and making it feel like Windows XP is not a particularly difficult challenge. Nevertheless, users have been doing this for years and it's not something bound to stop anytime soon.

The Q4OS distribution takes this resemblance to the next level because not only is it using themes and icon packs, but it's also actually based on a desktop environment that can recreate most of the visuals aspects of old Windows distros. To be fair, certain, more modern features of Q4OS stray a little bit from that particular path, but not by much.

Q4OS is ultimately a Linux distro

Even if you don't like the idea of having a Windows lookalike on your system, you still have to admit that it's much safer than the operating system it is trying to imitate. It might not feel like much, but security is highly praised nowadays.

The makers of the OS said that a "new command-line tool to globally change display DPI is introduced in Q4OS to be usable with high-DPI screens. Important core system packages updates and security fixes has been applied. Users could appreciate better system integration and cleaner dependencies of Adobe Flashplayer, especially in combination with Firefox 34 or later."

Moreover, from the looks of it, developers are also preparing to launch version 1.0 and they are just waiting for the release of Debian 8 "Jessie."

You can download Q4OS 0.5.24 right now from Softpedia and you can find more details about this new version of the operating system in the official announcement.
