TAG Heuer is getting ready to enter smartwatch domain

Smartwatches might be the next best thing in tech or at least that’s what the media is saying. What’s certain is that we’re seeing more and more products form the category being launched on the market and even the all-mighty Apple has conformed and launched a watch of its own.

Even if the dreaded Apple Watch is expected to obliterate the competition with grace, the Swiss watch industry doesn't seem to be too bothered by the upraise of the intelligent timepiece. One Swiss watch industry expert said at some point that smartwatches are essentially transient products rather than items of enduring value.

And he might be right after all. The thing is that, even if smartwatches are all over the place, people are still skittish about picking up one of these devices, chiefly because they are so very expensive.

TAG Heuer is eyeing the smartwatch business

But even if the Swiss watch industry has kept an elitist distance from the “mundane” world of smartwatches, some key players appear to be having a sudden change of heart.

According to a report coming from the Business Insider, one of the biggest Swiss Watch brands TAG Heuer is apparently gearing up to launch a smartwatch.

TAG Heuer has been previously rumored to be working hand in hand with the Cupertino behemoth Apple to produce the Watch. However, the company full-heartedly denied the rumors and slipped out it was working on a product of its own.

The source familiar with the matter said that the watch would probably draw life from an Intel processor, but other spec-related details were left out.

Keep an eye out for the TAG Heuer smartwatch at CES 2015

The watch is expected to make an appearance at the Consumer Electronic Show (CES) 2015, a massive event usually taking place in Las Vegas at the beginning of January (this year it is scheduled for 5-9).

Then the watch will probably go on sale during the first quarter of 2015 for an undisclosed sum of money, most likely a quite chunky one.

Looking at the world of smartwatches today, we’d probably have to pick the Withings Activite as a model, so you can get an idea of what the TAG Heuer watch will look like – sleek, classy and integrating the intelligent capabilities in a subtle fashion.

So even if the Swiss watch industry is trying to play the cold card and appear unchallenged by the advent of smartwatches, the reality is that they are keeping a close watch on the developments in the industry. So we shouldn't be surprised if some other companies decide to join the race.
