On April 21, Michael Tremer announced that a new maintenance release for IPFire, a Linux distribution that can be used by beginning and experienced system administrators alike to deploy a firewall, proxy server, or VPN gateway on their infrastructure without too much hassle, is available for download.

IPFire 2.17 Core 89 includes a significant amount of new features, among which we can mention support for collecting and graphing connection statistics for the OpenVPN net-to-net connections, IKE lifetime support for up to 24 hours in the IPsec component, and smaller disk description strings.

The Firewall component received various improvements, such as better setting rate-limiting rules, which weren't applied correctly every time, limitation to 15 services per protocol in service groups, and support for removing the remark of firewall rules.

In addition, IPFire 2.17 Core 89 brings numerous improvements to the dynamic DNS updater tool, allows users to set expiration times for net-to-net connection certificates in OpenVPN, fixes an error in the squid-accounting component, and improves finding of model and vendor of ARM single-board computers.
