The following tutorial will teach all Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) users how to upgrade their installations to the recently released Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet) operating system.

In case you didn't know, Canonical released the final version of the Ubuntu 15.04 distribution on April 23. The new release brings lots of under-the-hood improvements, such as a snappier Unity user interface and a recent Linux kernel.

The official support for Ubuntu 14.10 will end sometime around July 2015, but the Ubuntu 15.04 release will be supported by Canonical with security patches and software updates until January 2016.

Therefore, we think that it is best for you to upgrade your Ubuntu 14.10 machine(s) to Ubuntu 15.04 as soon as possible, in order to avoid any complications.

Before upgrading, please make sure that you have all the latest updates installed. For that, click on the Unity Dash and search for the Update Manager tool. Open it and wait a few seconds for the update information to be displayed.

Upgrading to a new Ubuntu release is easier than you think

Apply all the available updates and reboot your computer if required. When you return to your Ubuntu 14.10 desktop, open the Update Manager utility again and wait for the notification about the Ubuntu 15.04 upgrade.

Click the “Upgrade” button to proceed. Make sure that you click the “Upgrade” button again on the Release Notes window, then wait for the upgrade tool to gather all the information it requires from your system.

At this point, you will be notified whether your computer is compatible with Ubuntu 15.04 or not. If it is, click on the "Start Upgrade" button. The entire upgrade process will take about 1-2 hours, depending on your Internet connection and the specs of your PC.

At some point during the upgrade process, you will be asked to remove some obsolete packages, so it is advised to do so. When the upgrade process is complete, you will have to restart your computer. That's it! You've upgraded Ubuntu 14.10 (Utopic Unicorn) to Ubuntu 15.04 (Vivid Vervet).
