Do not attempt this at home under any circumstances

Apple just launched its new iOS 8 operating system and it didn’t take long for the first malicious hoaxes to appear in the wild.

It’s like Apple fans don’t seem to learn from what’s happened in the past. You might remember that, back in 2013, a lot of folks fell for the “iOS 7 makes your iPhone waterproof” hoax.

Well, in 2014, things in the quack department escalated to a whole different level. A fake image advertising the hidden “Wave” technology offered by Apple surfaced on Twitter and went viral in the blink of an eye (as seen at CBS Pittsburgh).

In it, iPhone users are told that their phones can be charged by being put in the microwave. Obviously, this is a load of crazy, so don’t try doing this under absolutely any circumstances.

The bogus image claims that users will need to place their phone in a microwave for a minute and a half to pump life into their handset. This is apparently possible because the device’s radio-baseband can now synchronize with the microwave frequency.

The advertisement might seem genuine, because it comes bearing the company’s copyright symbol at the bottom and mimics the fonts to the smallest details, but I can assure you it’s not.

Some users have already posted images of their burned up iPhones, so step away from the microwave, please!
