The game is a satirical, action-packed top-down shooter

Developer Arrowhead Game Studios announces that its top-down shooter Helldivers is coming out at the beginning of March, to the PlayStation family of devices.

The development team released a gameplay trailer to showcase the upcoming video game’s features and crazy amount of action. The game looks like an over-the-top, tongue-in-cheek adaptation of Starship Troopers that’s less about honor and upholding a sacred duty and more about killing an insane amount of alien forces.

The game is set in an original universe, featuring procedurally generated content, and three different alien species to fight, all for the glory of Super Earth.

Helldivers takes place in a fictional distant future, where mankind is ruled by a so-called democracy that wants to spread itself by force to the far reaches of the known universe. The brainwashed citizens see it as their creed, and mindlessly fight whoever they perceive as opposing it, and threatening their freedom and way of life.

An interesting twist to a classic formula

Gameplay follows an open world approach, where players have to roam the maps and accomplish a certain number of objectives. The order in which they are satisfied and the location where players will drop from the massive orbital ships are left entirely to gamers’ discretion.

In addition to this, players also have a wide array of weapons, perks and combat drops to customize and choose from before landing on the planets where the action take place, and are able to call down reinforcements in the heat of battle.

Arrowhead Game Studios are best known for having created Magicka, the hectic multiplayer custom spell casting adventure video game, and Gauntlet, the modern reboot of the classic arcade dungeon crawler, so they have plenty of experience with top-down games that feature a crazy amount of action.

Helldivers is coming out on March 3 in North America, and March 4 in Europe, available exclusively on the PlayStation 3 and PlayStation 4 home consoles from Sony, and on the PlayStation Vita handheld gaming device, with cross-buy between all platforms enabled.
