The instrument-based music games genre soared and met its doom during the same decade, selling millions and then crashing and burning with little action during recent years.

Ubisoft's Rocksmith is probably the only one to survive, due to the fact that it's actually a more serious learning aid, instead of focusing on the arcade lighthearted action of Guitar Hero or Rock Band.

Now, Harmonix is working on Rock Band 4, due out later this year, headed to the PlayStation 4 home console from Sony and the Xbox One computer entertainment system from Microsoft.

The new instruments will be created by notable gaming peripherals designer and manufacturer Mad Catz, but they will not feature any enhancements over the old ones.

The game will also be compatible with all previously released plastic instruments, in order to cater to the already existing fanbase, and Harmonix has thought of something else to amp things up for the upcoming release.

You can request your favorite songs

On the developer's website, the company is urging fans to provide them with suggestions of artists that they would like to see in the upcoming Rock Band.

"This page does not guarantee that a request will make it into the game. We can't promise anything, but we will read every request to get a better understanding of what the community most wants to see in Rock Band," the page reads.

You have to provide a song title and artist name, one at a time, but there is no limit on how many suggestions you can make, so if you're planning to dust off your old plastic guitar anytime soon, you might as well try to get some of your favorite songs in the game.

Don't forget, Rock Band 4 will be compatible with all previously released DLC for the series, so you don't have to worry about your already purchased content going to waste, but only about what new stuff should be added to the title.
