Users can’t place phone calls from their handsets anymore

Owners of Android systems are probably accustomed to the occasional bug. While most of the times these issues are minor ones and don’t necessarily interfere with the overall functioning of the device, sometimes things can take a turn for the worse.

For example, some owners of the HTC One M8 and M7 handsets have been complaining on forums that they are finding it impossible to take advantage of the phones’ main function: placing a voice call.

HTC One M8's and M7's basic function broken

Users are describing a situation where both caller and receiver can’t even hear a dial tone when trying to place a phone call.

“I've had my HTC One for a year and a month. No problems so far (other than the purple tint thing, but everyone gets that)...until last night.”

“I got a couple of phone calls , and when I answered, I found that I couldn't hear the other person and they couldn't hear me either. When I made some calls myself, I couldn't hear the tone in my own phone, though I could hear the phone I was calling (my landline) ringing."

"Answering on the landline, I couldn't hear anything on my phone and the landline couldn't hear anything either,” says user PondaRox who started the topic on the xda-developers forum.

Some temporary fixes like clearing cache/data on Google Play Services, Google Play Framework or uninstalling Chrome altogether have been suggested. Sadly, even if the problem seems to go away for a while, it makes a triumphant come back not long after.

A more dramatic solution could be a factory reset; however, you should take into consideration that you will lose all your data if you do so (unless you do a backup).

HTC's latest Service Pack update might be responsible for the damage

It appears that the latest HTC Service Pack update is to blame for these issues (as you can see, users are complaining about the same problems in the Google Play Section).

The new piece of software apparently contains code that goes head to head with Google’s Services framework, so the result is that these devices are unable to carry out their most basic function.

So if you’re planning to update your handset too, we suggest you hold on for a while and wait for HTC to roll out its next release.

HTC has been quite silent about these problems, so there’s no software update to help affected users restore basic functionalities to their smartphones.

Hopefully, the producing company will do something about it quickly.
