The update should have arrived today, November 21, 2014

Bad news for Android fans who purchased Google Play Edition (GPE) smartphones in order to get their updates first hand, as HTC announced it has delayed the rollout of Android 5.0 Lollipop for One (M7) and One (M8) smartphones.

The Taiwanese handset maker confirmed last week that these two GPE devices should start receiving the update sometime this week. However, a few days ago, HTC stated that the update wouldn’t arrive early this week, but that the new target for the release was this Friday.

Well, it looks like it won’t be this Friday either, as HTC’s VP of Product Management Mo Versi confirms the Android 5.0 Lollipop for both HTC One (M7) and One (M8) has been delayed.

Apparently, HTC has already submitted the software build to Google on Monday, but they were informed on November 21 that they will have to “re-spin” it.

It’s unclear whether or not this is HTC’s fault, but the fact remains that customers who own HTC’s Google Play Edition smartphones won’t be getting their promised update.

We’ve been reporting in the last couple of days about various issues affecting Nexus devices upgraded to Android 5.0 Lollipop. Some of them seem to have spread to other smartphones that received the update, which might be one of the reasons Google hasn’t approved HTC’s Lollipop build yet.

No ETA has been given for the release of the update yet

Nexus 4 and 5 were the first smartphones to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop update, followed by Motorola Moto X (2014) and Moto G (2014).

The next in line should be all the Google Play Edition smartphones launched by Sony Mobile, HTC and Samsung, but it looks like the rollout will take some time given the latest bugs that have been found in the update.

HTC’s official did not specify when exactly the Android 5.0 Lollipop update might arrive on its One (M7) and One (M8) devices, but if Google is to blame for it, then the Taiwanese company will have to wait until the search giant irons out all the issues reported in the last week or so.

HTC also promised that it would offer the Android 5.0 Lollipop update to One (M8) and One (M7), regular versions, within 3 months since they receive the final build from Google.

This means that owners of these devices should receive the update by the end of January 2015. Unfortunately, seeing how many issues the upgrade has, it would be a mirace if HTC were able to keep its promise. Stay tuned for more info on the matter.
