The Huawei official says we don’t really need 2K screens

The ongoing battle for supremacy between Apple and Samsung has been at the very core of the tech world since forever. But if we step away from the industry’s titans and move towards other pastures, we find that Chinese mobile key players are also at each others' throats.

If you follow the news in smartphone land, you probably know that device makers like Xiaomi and Meizu have been offering QHD displays on their latest handsets, the MX4 Pro and Mi Note Pro.

Huawei believes 2K displays aren't worth it

Well, as reported by Gizmo China, Huawei exec Yu Chengdong believes 2K displays are actually a waste of effort.

He claims Huawei ran some endurance tests of the phones mentioned above and the results showed the phones’ displays were extremely unimpressive. He did not specify what the exact tests were, thus leaving a lot of room for speculation.

However, he made a few comments about the Mi Note Pro relying on a “skimpy” 3,000 mAh battery while trying to support a demanding QHD panel.

But since the Mi Note Pro hasn’t started shipping out to consumers, we’re yet to see how it will behave in real-life conditions.

As for the Meizu MX4 Pro, the handset takes advantage of a Sharp panel that tends to suck less power out of the battery, so we don't think the impact of a 2K display on life cycle is all that dramatic.

To 2K or not to 2K?

But the underlying question here is: do we really need 2K screens? Huawei CEO suggests that 1080p is enough and they are offering the standard with the Ascend Mate 7 which uses the services of a chunky 4,000 mAh battery too.

It has been said on numerous occasions that the human eye finds it difficult to distinguish what comes over 300ppi, so maybe the Huawei chief is onto something here.

Or maybe they are just trying to make the competition look bad. After all, leaks suggest that the company’s upcoming Mate 8 smartphone will arrive with a 2K display, as well as the (Ascend) D8. Has the company changed its plans? We don’t think so, as trends tend to dictate the path a device maker takes with new products.
