Pundit weighs in on the WSJ's breakdown by model

The Wall Street Journal recently issued a breakdown of the estimated sales-per-model for the Apple Watch. As many as 1 million units of the gold version will be manufactured in the first quarter, generating some insane numbers.

Rumor has it that the Apple Watch Edition could cost between $4,000 (€3,500) and $5,000 (which translates into approximately €4,400). Pundit John Gruber, who is known to have solid ties to Apple, believes this particular model could sell for as much as $10,000 (€8,765)

Apple’s most expensive product yet

Emphasis ours:

“If Apple actually sells 1 million Edition units per quarter, and they sell for an ASP of $5,000, that’s $5 billion [4.4 billion] in revenue per quarter — just for the gold Edition models. If the ASP is closer to $10,000 [€8,765], which I still think is possible, double that.”

Factor in the other models - the Sport and the Steel watches - and Apple could be sitting on an $8 billion (€7 billion) business with its new wearable. And that’s just in the first quarter, when the device will probably skip a few countries.

According to the WSJ report, China will be the primary buyer of the gold-laden model. Analysts base this belief on the fact that China is the biggest buyer of iPhone 6 Pluses in a golden finish.

A $10,000 [€8,765] would make the gold watch Apple’s most expensive product yet (excluding built-to-order tower Macs and servers which can go even higher than that).

A luxury item

Being so expensive, the watch will reportedly be encased in safes. It will be displayed in a special VIP area according to reports. This area might even include carpets, according to a comment made by Apple’s chief designer, Jonathan Ive, during an interview for a New Yorker profile.

Apple has spent more than $70 million (€60 million) to hire Angela Ahrendts from Burberry to help with the watch’s debut and the store redesigns.
