Support for multiple SIM cards has been added too

We reported earlier today that US-based carrier T-Mobile confirmed that it would kick off the rollout of Android 5.1 Lollipop update for Nexus 4, 5 and 7 (2013) beginning March 9.

A few hours later, Google announced the immediate availability of Android 5.1 Lollipop for Nexus devices.

Although the search giant is not too specific on which devices will receive the update today, we can safely assume that all compatible Nexus devices will get the update.

What's interesting about Google's announcement is that there are some new features that have been detailed, which will be available once you update to Android 5.1 Lollipop OS version.

First of all, Android 5.1 brings new features like support for multiple SIM cards, Device Protection, and high definition (HD) voice on compatible phones.

Basically, Android 5.1 now allows Lollipop smartphones to use more than one SIM card on a device with multiple SIM slots.

The second major new feature included in this update is Device Protection, which provides smartphone owners with an extra layer of security.

Your phone should be safer when lost or stolen with Android 5.1 Lollipop

When stolen or lost, the device with Android 5.1 Lollipop will remain locked until the owner signs in with their Google account, even if someone resets it to factory settings.

According to Google, the Device Protection feature will be available on most Android smartphones and tablets shipped with Android 5.1, in addition to Nexus 6 and Nexus 9.

Furthermore, Android 5.1 brings HD voice calling between compatible devices with this version of OS installed, such as Nexus 6 on T-Mobile or Verizon.

Last but not least, lots of other enhancements, including the option to join Wi-Fi networks and control of paired Bluetooth devices directly from Quick Settings, have been added.

Android 5.1 Lollipop for Nexus devices will be rolled out OTA (over the air) in stages, so it might take a while until it reaches all phones and tablets. The images will probably be published in a few days as well.
