The folks over at Zive seek to raise $20,000 by December 9

Gmail is one of the most used webmail platforms in the world. While there are plenty of apps for all mobile platforms, the desktop email experience is something foreign.

That’s why the folks over at Zive have launched a Kickstarter to help fund Gmail for Mac, an email client that brings a lot of cool features to the service Google created.

The campaign has a pretty modest goal of $20,000 (€16,145), out of which it has already managed to attract nearly $6,000 (€4,843) after only two days. Launched on November 5, the last day the project will be open for funding is December 9, 31 days from now.

The team states that, while they love Gmail for all it does to make email friendly and more human, there’s no proper desktop app. Using Outlook or Mail, for instance, will get you your messages, but it will lose many of the main features that Gmail has, such as the labels, buckets and search.

Tired of having to always use the browser to enjoy Gmail, Zive took on this new project some 18 months ago. It hopes that, by January 2015, everything will be up and ready to go and, more importantly, ready to be delivered to the backers.

What does the app bring new?

According to the presentation, the Gmail app will launch like any other Mac app, loading the familiar Gmail interface that we’ve all become accustomed to. The app, however, will come with support for gestures and shortcuts, which makes controlling the email service that much easier. There is also a notifications button in the menu bar, and you’ll be able to launch compose windows from the same area.

The coolest feature that Gmail for Mac brags about is the ability to add multiple accounts to the same app. This means that you’ll be able to swap from one Gmail account to another by simply clicking on a tab in the top bar of the app. This won’t require users to log in over and over again, which is, of course, a time saver.

“All your accounts, just one click away. We’ve done what Google could never achieve in the browser. No more signing in or random sign-outs,” they state. The team adds that they had to invent new technology to improve the usability and reliability on this beyond what Google’s been able to offer for browser users.

The app also comes with a way to filter the noise of your email by having it display only important notifications, but also to set the “do not disturb” sign on the notifications so that you can get some peace and quiet. Zive also boasts that they’ve manage to make huge attachments possible, without involving Dropbox, but by simply “fixing” Google Drive.
