A new version of Git is now ready for download

Git is a free and open source distributed version control system that has been built to handle small and very large projects with speed and efficiency. Its developers have just released a new version and it's quite a big one.

It's been a while since the previous Git update, but now the devs have returned with a vengeance. They have managed to make a ton of improvements and changes, and many of them are quite interesting. As usual, it will take a while to get the new version in all the repositories, but this is an important application and it won't be ignored.

"git config --edit --global starts from a skeletal per-user configuration file contents, instead of a total blank, when the user does not already have any global config. This immediately reduces the need to later ask 'Have you forgotten to set core.user?', and we can add more to the template as we gain more experience," reads the official announcement. More than 500 different changes have been made, so if you're a Git user, you might consider updating as soon as possible.

For a complete list of changes, check out the changelog. You can download Git 2.2 right now from Softpedia, although this is the source package and you'll have to compile it.
