An open source client would be a great addition

GOG Galaxy is a new gaming client for the GOG distributions service, but for now it's only available for the Windows platform. As a response, the GOG wish list now shows the open source GOG Galaxy client as the most requested item.

GOG distinguished itself among all the other services with a couple of features that no one provides. First of all, GOG is a home for old games that have been re-released and that work on new systems. Even better, GOG also provides Linux support for many of those titles. The second aspect is that all of their titles are DRM free. They promote games that have no protection whatsoever, and they rely on the customers' honesty.

For these two reasons alone (although many more good things can be said about GOG), the digital distribution platform has been gaining a lot of fans and users in the past year or so. The fact that they also support the Linux platform is a plus and that accounts for the incredible interest shown for the release of the open source GOG Galaxy client.

GOG Galaxy on Linux will make a difference

Linux is not the most friendly platform and that is probably why there isn't even a GOG downloader, let alone a Galaxy client. The Windows and Mac platforms already have access to the Galaxy client, albeit still in Beta stages, but Linux is just a promise.

"Opening the source code of the Galaxy client, or parts of it would allow the community to contribute to the client development and avoid multiple unofficial clients to lag behind the official one," reads the request on the GOG wish list. The request already gathered over 3000 votes.

To be fair, GOG only promised that GOG Galaxy would arrive on the Linux platform sometime in the future, but they never said that it was going to be open source. It remains to be seen if they will fulfill this request from the community.
