The game is rumored to be in development for PS4 & Xbox One

It seems that Activision has a brand new Guitar Hero game in the pipeline, which might even be released later this year.

The news comes from Kotaku, citing two separate sources inside the publisher, who claim that the game will be announced at this year's edition of the E3 expo.

Previous Guitar Hero games had a more cartoonish visual style, focusing on fun more than realism, but the upcoming installment in the series is rumored to have a more realistic focus. This means that both crowds and performers will look more like they do in real life.

The game is reportedly headed to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One home consoles, and there are new peripherals in the making for the title.

For the time being, lacking an official statement from Activision aside from "no comment," you should take this rumor with a grain of salt. A resurrection of the rhythm-based gaming franchise on the new generation of consoles would indeed be in order, as there hasn't been any action on that front in quite a while.

The last entry in the series was Warriors or Rock, released in late 2010, and Activision pulled the plug on the series in 2011, after noticing the increasingly waning popularity of the franchise, after a period of boom in the mid and late '00s.

More potential good news for music video game fans

Another music game franchise, Rock Band, might also be making a comeback sometime this year, according to developer Harmonix. Speculation began when the company released two new tracks for the popular video game Rock Band 3, Tenacious D's "Rize of the Fenix" and Weezer's "Back to the Shack," which many members of the gaming community interpreted as a sign that the series was making a full return.

In the meantime, Ubisoft's Rocksmith remains a very good alternative for those who would like to gain actual guitar skills while playing, as it's less focused on arcade fun and more on learning the songs you're playing, making it actually useful to those with a real interest in music, instead of a really expensive version of air guitar.
