Users post disappointed replies that the "promo" didn't work

Facebook and Twitter users these days have received their share of scam for the week, when messages claiming that Tesco is giving away gift cards worth £75 / €95 / $120.

The campaign appears to have started on Facebook, where a significant number of users were exposed to a simple, but apparently efficient message. It simply read “Get a £75 Tesco Voucher couponshop(dot)pw Tesco is giving away Gift Cards! Get Yours now!” as Christopher Boyd of Malwarebytes observed.

As it usually happens in the case of such scams, the potential victim is asked to share the message before proceeding to claiming the alleged voucher. After that, they are either supposed to complete an online survey that could potentially harvest personal information (email, phone number), or to download a PUP (potentially unwanted program).

While analyzing the fraud, Boyd was served a PUP that currently has a 16 out of 54 detection rate on VirusTotal.

After realizing the deceit, some users would share their disappointment of not getting the promised free Tesco voucher. However, it is unclear how many of them fell for the trick.

On Twitter, where links to the dodgy websites are shortened with Facebook’s service, users would reach the exact same outcome.
