Canonical revealed that the latest Firefox 36 package has been added to the repositories and users can now upgrade their systems in order to get it.

It usually takes a few days until the maintainers push the latest Firefox packages to the repositories, but this time they did it in record time. Firefox 36 was made available only yesterday and now Ubuntu users will be able to install it with just a simple system update.

Firefox 36 is quite an interesting update and it brings a few major improvements, besides the support for the new HTTP/2. For example, users will be able to sync their tiles across devices, a very useful feature. Also, the 1024-bit RSA Keys are being phased out and add-on developers will have to make some changes for their packages.

Firefox 36 is now available on all supported Ubuntu OSes

The systems that will receive the new Firefox package are Ubuntu 14.10, Ubuntu 14.04 LTS, and Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. You will notice that Ubuntu 10.04 LTS is not among them, but that's only the server version.

"Matthew Noorenberghe discovered that whitelisted Mozilla domains could make UITour API calls from background tabs. If one of these domains were compromised and open in a background tab, an attacker could potentially exploit this to conduct clickjacking attacks. Also, Jan de Mooij discovered an issue that affects content using the Caja Compiler. If web content loads specially crafted code, this could be used to bypass sandboxing security measures provided by Caja," is noted in the security update.

These are just a couple of the issues fixed with the latest Firefox update. Upgrading to the latest version of Firefox can be done very easily with the regular Software Update, but you could also use the terminal if you want things to move a little faster. It also helps users see what other packages are being upgraded.

Open a terminal and enter the following commands:

code
sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get dist-upgrade
