Square Enix has announced the release date of the upcoming Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn expansion, Heavensward, headed our way this June.

The Japanese company's biggest massively multiplayer online role-playing game is getting its first substantial content patch, with a ton of new and exciting features, including new classes, a new race, and a new continent.

You will be able to pre-order the Heavensward expansion as early as March 16, in three different editions, standalone, bundled with the base game, and collector's edition.

Square Enix is also currently working on setting up its European servers, intended to minimize lag issues for players in the region. Currently, European players have to connect to the company's servers in Canada, which mars the overall experience due to the inherent latency involved.

A great deal of new content

Square Enix has released a neat video outlining all the incoming changes and showing off some of the new areas that you'll be able to explore, which you can watch below.

The upcoming expansion will introduce three new jobs, the Machinist, the Astrologian and the Dark Knight. The three classes will introduce new ways of enjoying adventuring through Eorzea, the Astrologian filling in the long-awaited role of support healer.

The Machinist is a sort of engineer, a ranged damage dealer who employs a wide range of turrets to inflict damage, enabling users to enjoy a new type of gameplay.

Finally, the Dark Knight will play the role of tank, being the third such class, using Greatswords as their weapon of choice.

Furthermore, the Heavensward expansion will allow gamers to play as a completely new race, the Au Ra. The dragonkin folk hails from the continent of Othard, and the masked character Yugiri is one of them.

Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn - Heavensward is coming out on June 23, available on Windows PC and the PlayStation 4 and PlayStation 4 computer entertainment systems from Sony. The expansion's launch will also mark the game's release on Mac OS X.
