Square Enix has released a brand new video showcasing the combat system from the upcoming Final Fantasy Type-0 HD.

The action in the game begins when one of the kingdoms in the world invades the others, trying to secure control of some very powerful arcane crystals. With your capital under siege, you assume control of a group of young cadets who become the last fighting chance against the enemy invaders.

The video, fashioned in the usual way of an Orience News report, displays some in-game action, depicting the cadets of Class Zero fighting various enemies.

Class Zero has 14 members to choose from in battle, and when one is fallen, he or she can be replaced by another. However, slain cadets remain out of commission for the remainder of the encounter.

The cadets fight in groups of three, each of them using a specific weapon. The characters are also able to perform two kinds of timed strikes, by paying attention to enemy movement, dealing massive damage or even outright eliminating a foe in a single blow.

The unique weapons that the members of Class Zero carry enable them to perform impressive and damaging attacks, and as they gain experience in battle, more abilities can be unlocked.

The magic system is a pretty important component of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD's combat system. The offensive battle spells are divided between fire, lighting and ice-based attacks, and cadets can increase the power, range, and speed of their spells as they gain experience after defeating enemies.

Powerful combat abilities

The most powerful combat moves are called Triad Maneuvers, where the entire team of three cadets works in unison in order to perform a devastating assault against a single enemy.

Furthermore, a cadet can also sacrifice his or her life and summon a formidable elemental ally. The summoned monsters are called Eidolons, and they are an instrumental tool in fending off the invasion.

Any fallen cadets can be revived by returning to base, as can the ones sacrificed to summon Eidolon.

Final Fantasy Type-0 HD is a remake of the popular PlayStation Portable hit Japanese role-playing game from 2011. The game is headed to the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One home consoles, on March 17 in North America, March 19 in Japan, and March 20 in Europe.

By pre-ordering the game, you'll be able to secure exclusive access to the upcoming Final Fantasy XV beta test. The game is on its way to Xbox One and PS4, but for the time being, it has no prospective release date.
