Fedora Project announced the release of the highly anticipated Fedora 22 Linux operating system on May 26, 2015, an improved version that brings a significant number of new features, but also quite a few under-the-hood improvements.

As you may know, Fedora 22 is distributed in multiple editions called Spins, including Fedora 22 Server, Fedora 22 Cloud, Fedora 22 Workstation (GNOME), Fedora 22 KDE, Fedora 22 Xfce, Fedora 22 LXDE, and Fedora 22 MATE/Compiz.

The Cloud Edition of Fedora 22 is not as mediatized as one might expect, so we thought it would be a good idea to write an article for those of you who want to learn about the new features that were implemented in this release.

“Fedora 22 Cloud edition has some interesting updates that should be exciting for users and developers,” said Fedora Project. "Building on the work of Fedora 21 Cloud, Fedora 22 Cloud Beta brings in a number of improvements that makes Fedora 22 an excellent choice for running Linux in a cloud computing environment."

Highlights of Fedora 22 Cloud Edition

Prominent features of the Fedora 22 Cloud Edition include updated Docker images that can be used by system administrators to run containerized applications without too much hassle, as well as a fedora-dockerfiles package for developing apps using only the Fedora 22 Dockerfile and some extra packages.

Additionally, Fedora 22 Cloud Edition comes with the latest versions of the rpm-ostree tools and rpm-ostree-toolbox, allowing users to generate their own Atomic hosts using a custom set of packages. SysAdmins will be able to control Atomic Host container settings and updates via a new Atomic command. Also, there are updates to Docker, Flannel, and Kubernetes.

Lastly, Vagrant boxes are now available in Fedora 22 Cloud Edition for the Oracle VirtualBox and libvirt virtualization solutions. This is one of the most requested features for Fedora 22 Cloud, as it allows developers to build Fedora-based development environments on any operating system, including Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.
