The role-playing game is headed to the PS4 and Xbox One

Square Enix has released some more in-game shots of Final Fantasy XV, the highly anticipated Japanese role-playing game, displaying a compelling level of visual fidelity.

Say what you will, but the direct feed footage provided by the developer so far looks amazing, so much so that it’s getting increasingly harder to believe that Final Fantasy XV will actually look like that and have a high enough frame rate to be playable at launch.

The game is set in the Fabula Nova Crystallis Universe and will be released on the Xbox One home entertainment system from Microsoft and the PlayStation 4 home console from Sony, at a yet unannounced later date.

Square Enix has unveiled its plans to provide a playable portion of the game as a beta test sometime during 2015, and subsequent reveals have pointed out to the extremely exclusive nature of the affair, as the game codes for access to Final Fantasy XV: Episode Duscae will only be available in the first print run of Final Fantasy Type-0 HD, the remastered PSP classic JRPG.

That means that, if you want to play what looks like the PlayStation 4’s most impressive-looking game to date, you also have to shell out some cash in order to get your hands on one of the most underwhelming-looking titles. Either that or be very, very patient.

A slight shift in gameplay

Game Director Hajime Tabata stated that the upcoming Final Fantasy XV would feature a more streamlined combat system, friendlier to more casual gamers, in order to enable everyone to enjoy the title’s narrative.

The combat system is similar to the one used in the Kingdom Hearts series, and Tabata informed that it would focus on gameplay flow and decisions rather than on mechanical precision.

Final Fantasy XV will feature apparitions from Titan and Cid, two series mainstays, which will have a slightly different incarnation this time around, as can be easily seen in the gallery below.

Players will be able to explore the game’s sprawling world freely, enjoying seamless transitions between exploration and battle, with no loading screens. Gamers will be able to visit various towns and spend the night at an inn to rest, and they will be able to buy equipment and supplies for cooking, to be used when camping in the wild.

The game will use a real-time day and night cycle, and players will have to navigate the world and retrieve a magical crystal, during a full-blown invasion.
