All hope is lost for Twi-hards: Twigs is here to stay

T-Pain, aka the “inventor” of Auto-Tuned pop music, hasn’t had a new album in 4 years, but he’s about to make up for that soon. He has been working hard in the studio for some time and is eager to get his new sound out there to fans, he tells Vulture in a new interview.

The same interview contains a little gem not related to his musical pursuits, and as unexpected as possible: FKA Twigs, the British singer-songwriter-dancer famous for her out-of-this-world music and videos, is engaged to be married to British “Twilight” hottie Robert Pattinson.

There goes all hope from Twi-hards that he’d ever get back with his on-screen love interest and real-life ex-girlfriend Kristen Stewart!

That sound you’re hearing is wedding bells

Vulture chatted with T-Pain about his new sound (Auto-Tune-less, thank God) and the current artists he’s been listening to and from which he draws inspiration. He also talks a bit about his collaboration with the late R&B princess Aaliyah and how badly he’d love to get into the studio with FKA Twigs for something to be included on his new album.

T-Pain has been listening to a lot of FKA Twigs lately, it would seem; but a collaboration is not in the cards right now for practical reasons.

He explains, “But she’s on tour so much, and anytime I call her, she’s in a different place. And she’s engaged now, so that’s about to be a whole other thing. [Laughs.]”

Come again?! “Yeah, to ol’ Patty [Robert Pattinson]. I don’t know if she wanted anybody to know that…” T-Pain teases.

So it sounds just like T-Pain accidentally let the cat out of the bag, which, if true, would be a huge shame considering that these two, Twigs and Pattinson, have been really making an effort to keep their romance as much as possible out of the media.

April Fools, right?

The moment Vulture ran the story, it got a lot of attention online and probably not for the reason T-Pain would have wanted: instead of paying attention to what he was saying about his music, his music evolution and his next project, people focused mostly on that little secret he had apparently revealed in the spur of the moment.

However, it might have been a hoax. In an update to the original story, Vulture says T-Pain reached out to them after the interview to claim that the engagement news was just an April Fools joke he thought would be hilarious. He was probably happy people had fallen for it.

While that is very likely, consider this: Vulture ran the interview on April Fools, but chances are it was conducted some time before that, as it usually happens with pieces of this kind. That would mean that T-Pain knew for certain when it would be published and planned the joke to coincide with April Fools.

The other, a bit more likely theory is that he got caught up in the moment and revealed something he shouldn’t have. He probably hoped Variety wouldn’t publish it, so when they did, he went in damage control mode and claimed it had been a joke. The publishing date was very convenient for that.
