The OS has just received support for the English language

Escuelas Linux 3.0.21 is a distribution developed initially for Spanish-speaking schools and now the devs have expanded the operating system by adding English language support as well.

The Escuelas Linux operating system has been around for quite some time and the Spanish-speaking users might have already seen it in action, but it went largely unnoticed until now for the rest of the community.

Now, the first steps towards an English version have been taken, although it's a convoluted process that will take quite a while to finish. On the other hand, this is not the kind of OS that you install too often, so the effort might be worth it.

This means that the default installation will be made in Spanish, but users will be able to install the English support afterwards. On the bright side, the desktop is a very refreshing one, rivaling some of the established Linux distros out there.

Escuelas Linux is a pretty big distro

One of the things that users will notice immediately is the size of the operating system, at least for the ISO. There are not too many Linux distros out there that barely fit on a DVD. The devs have decided to integrate a large number of packages, some of them specific for schools, so the size is explicable.

"We are still working on an English language version of our Install manual, but we decided to release the 32 bit language version right now, because an English manual implies a lot of work and could delay this release. We still maintain the name of our distribution in Spanish ('Escuelas Linux') because its translation to English would be 'Linux schools', which is a name already in use by another project. Nevertheless, the name 'Escuelas Linux' does not appear in any part of our distro, so you are not going to see it."

"Support for setup of Escuelas Linux in Windows 8/8.1 UEFI computers, without the need of an Internet connection. In previous Escuelas Linux versions was needed to have the Windows 8/8.1 computer connected to the Internet in order to do some steps of the setup. That was very hard for people like us, when installing in schools or places without Internet access. We found a workaround to avoid the use of Internet, and it is already documented on the Install Manual," said the devs on the official website.

You can download Escuelas Linux 3.0.21 from Softpedia, but please keep in mind that it's a pretty big file, so it will take a while to get it and to install. Also, it doesn't seem to work in a virtual environment.
