The developers are still working on the Beta edition

Elive, a Linux distribution based on Debian that uses Enlightenment as the default desktop environment, has been upgraded to version 2.5.2 Beta and is now available for download and testing.

A new Beta for the Elive Linux distro has been made available and it looks like the developers still have some pretty important changes to make. The development cycle is in full swing and the devs even upgraded the Debian base to a new version, which is quite a big step.

One of the first things that users will notice is the fact that the operating system doesn't really ship with a regular desktop. The Enlightenment desktop environment is already pretty different from everything else out there, but the Elive makers have taken an extra step and they've made some pretty important customizations. The end result is something special. It takes a little time to get used to it, but it's definitely worth the shot.

Latest Elive comes with some unique improvements

Developers that put together a distribution usually just make sure that the packages work well together and they fix various problems that might appear, but the features being added to Elive don't really show up in other OSes.

According to the changelog, GIT and SVN are now available straight from the file manager, users will be able to use the iPhone to share the internet connection, the default file types are now much better handled, the sound-juicer, iptraf, nmap, and traceroute apps have been added, and the Debian base has been updated to version 7.8.

"Note that this development release doesn’t include yet the proprietary drivers for now (Nvidia/fglrx) but the open-source drivers should detect your hardware and configure your system without problems," reads the announcement for the distro.

More details about this distribution can be found in the official announcement. You can download Elive 2.5.2 Beta right now from Softpedia. It's a little bit more stable than the previous version, but it's still under development.
