The rest of the modes aren't that great or compelling

Evolve launched two weeks ago and brought forth quite a lot of different modes for its asymmetric competitive multiplayer experience, from the main Hunt one to Nest, Rescue, or the intriguing Defend one. Unfortunately for those looking for variety, the Hunt mode is mainly where the game shines.

Evolve rolled out at the beginning of the month, and ahead of that time, it was hyped up to great lengths by developer Turtle Rock Studios and publisher 2K Games. A lot of videos, screenshots, and details talked about the game's asymmetric recipe that allowed four players to control hunters cooperatively, and one player to go up against them as a monster.

Hunt is the star in Evolve

Of course, the main mode portrayed during most of the marketing campaign was the Hunt one, in which the hunters, as you can imagine, try to track down and kill the monster. Meanwhile, the monster must evolve to stage three and then target a power station on the map and destroy it to win. Alternatively, if they kill the hunters, they also win.

However, Turtle Rock also mentioned ahead of launch that there would be other modes, such as Rescue, in which the hunters must find injured colonists and help them escape, or Nest, in which they need to destroy monster eggs.

Unfortunately, the two experiences don't work all that well, and because of that, you'll have a pretty hard time finding others to go up against during these encounters.

As such, your only hope is to embark on the Evacuation game type, which strings together five matches from the various modes highlighted above, and offers in the fifth one a new type called Defend.

Evacuation is certainly more interesting thanks to its progression and consequence system, but due to the problematic matchmaking and host mechanics, you'll more often than not be kicked out of an ongoing experience before you reach the climax.

As such, at least until Turtle Rock fixes the host system and does something to spice up Nest or Rescue, it's the safest bet to just play Hunt matches.
