Users can pick which OS they want to have onboard

When deciding what tablet to purchase, one of the most important things we have to think about is what OS we want to have on board.

The debate between iOS, Android and Windows 8.1 has been going on since like forever, but before setting out to buy a tablet you might want to know what you will be using the tablet for. iOS and Windows have a reputation of being more productive, while Android appeals to the fun side of things.

Not having to choose leaves all possibilities open

But what if you wouldn't have to choose right from the get-go? That’s the scenario the French company eviGroup had in mind with the latest series of SmartPad 2 tablets (as spotted at Tablette-Tactile).

The device maker wants to offer customers the opportunity to choose what operating system they want on board. Surely, iOS is out of the question, since Apple doesn't allow its OS to be distributed outside of its in-house products, but available options include Linux and Windows.

As for Android, the company wasn't really specific whether opting for the OS is a viable solution or not, but we don’t see why this wouldn't be the case.

Alternatively, for an extra fee, eviGroup will ship out the tablet with Windows 8 or Windows 7 out of the box. Similarly, the company will offer the installation of other components like Office 2013, something which you’ll have to pay extra for.

EviGroup offers two models, but they are quite pricey

EviGroup will offer two models, one that will be marketed for €499 / €630 while the other will be offered for €699 / $883.

The base model takes advantage of an Intel Celeron dual-core processor clocked at 1.1GHz fitted with 4GB of RAM and 64GB of internal storage, which is quite an odd configuration.

As for the more advanced model, the only difference is that instead of the dual-core chip, there is dual-core Core i5 chip pumping life into the device.

The tablets come with an 11.6-inch display and bring about 1366 x 768 pixels resolution, specs which are more reminiscent of a laptop than of a tablet.

EviGroup also offers a keyboard companion and a smart stylus with the tablets, so it's pretty obvious the company is pushing these products as laptop substitutes.

The photography department is also covered, with a 1MP camera up in front and 2MP on the back. As for connectivity, users will be able to take advantage of USB 3.0, micro HDMI, micro SD plus Wi-Fi, Bluetooth and optional 3G.

The tablets should appeal to business users and customers alike, but given the fact that their price tags are quite high, we’re not sure how successful they are going to get.
