Cloud company plans to stop supporting old OS X versions

Despite the fact that most Mac users are currently running the newest version of Apple’s desktop operating system, there are many out there who still rely on older installments for their computing needs.

Compared to the number of users on OS X Mavericks and OS X Yosemite (released in 2013 and 2014 respectively), those who are still using their Macs with OS X Mountain Lion, OS X Snow Leopard, OS X Leopard, and OS X Tiger is fairly low. However, taken separately, the latter group is by no means negligible.

End of service

Which is why this email from Dropbox is likely to upset quite a few characters. To save you the trouble of reading what is essentially an eviction notice, the gist of it is that Dropbox is shunning you out if you’re running OS X Leopard or OS X Tiger. Now, for those who like inflicting pain on themselves, the full memo awaits below (in case you haven’t already seen it in your inbox) behind that big blue button.

To keep using Dropbox, you’ll either need to upgrade your OS to version 10.6 (Snow Leopard), or upgrade your hardware, in case your current Mac doesn’t go any further than Tiger or Leopard.

It’s ridiculous to tell someone who is using an ancient Mac to upgrade their hardware solely to keep using Dropbox, but who knows? Maybe some people rely on the cloud service so much that they’ll be prompted to reach for their wallet.
