Dreamfall Chapters is a new title in the The Longest Journey saga that was started 15 years ago when the game with the same name launched for the PC. Now, the developers have returned with a sequel that continues the story in the previous two games and it arrives today.

The first two games in the series were The Longest Journey and Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, and they both dealt with the adventures of Zoë Castillo, a girl that finds that her world, Stark (similar with a future Earth), is intertwined with a fantasy world called Arcadia. Someone is stealing the dreams of the creatures from both worlds in an attempt to enslave them.

The last game in the series, Dreamfall: The Longest Journey, left Zoë Castillo for dead and it seemed like that was the end of it, but the developers and the community built around this game wanted more. Dreamfall Chapters is the sequel that everyone has been waiting for and it's here for all the supported platforms at once, including Linux.

Dreamfall Chapters is an episodic game

Gamers didn't really hope to see a continuation of this story, especially 15 years after the first one. The Longest Journey is one of the best point and click quest games ever made, and that's hardly a disputed fact. Tough puzzles, an interesting story, and a beautifully crafted world were the ingredients that made this adventure great.

The license for The Longest Journey was held by Funcom, which is a publisher. Apparently, a sequel had been in the works for years, but a while ago Funcom announced that it would focus on online games, which meant that The Longest Journey was no longer being built. Fortunately, the writer and producer of the titles started his own studio, Red Thread Games, and convinced the guys at Funcom to let him use the rights to the franchise.

"Dreamfall Chapters is an episodic, story-driven adventure game about choices and consequences, dreams and reality, magic and science, chaos and order, and the broken heroes whose actions will shape the course of history in all worlds. Set in parallel worlds - one a dark cyberpunk vision of the future, the other a magical fantasy realm - the game follows two broken heroes on their journey across worlds to save the very nature of dreams from the Undreaming. Dreamfall Chapters is a mature, emotional, dark, magical and heartbreaking adventure that will take you by surprise," reads the Steam entry.

The game arrives today for Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X.
