BioWare re-purposed some of the old story ideas

BioWare's David Gaider, the lead writer on the Dragon Age series, confirms that he and the rest of the writing team used some plot threads from a canceled Dragon Age 2 expansion in the recent Inquisition, especially towards the end of the new RPG.

Dragon Age: Inquisition launched last November across a variety of platforms and delivered a stellar role-playing experience. It had a solid story that introduced a fresh protagonist, in the form of the Inquisitor, not to mention an engaging story that had plenty of references to past games.

Dragon Age 2 was set to get another expansion

While talking about the actual story, Lead Writer David Gaider confirms on his Tumblr that he and the rest of the writing team used some of the ideas and concepts that were initially developed for a Dragon Age 2 expansion that ultimately got canceled.

According to Gaider, the expansion never got past the planning stage, largely because Dragon Age 2 wasn't received all that well.

However, fans shouldn't be worried about missing out on it, as Gaider and his colleagues had some pretty nefarious plans for the fate of some major characters, so it ended up protecting them by not getting made.

"Though they should be happy, to be perfectly frank," Gaider says about fans missing out on the expansion. "The ending we had planned for the expansion was brutal, insofar as some of their favorite characters are concerned…which would have been delightful for us writers, but maybe not so much for them. Maybe it’s better this way. Or not."

The DLC inspired some key sequences in Inquisition

The canceled expansion did, however, have an impact on some of Inquisition's scenes, including the Temple of Mythal, which appears towards the end of the story and features some major discoveries.

"Whatever the case, I’ll just say that some basic plots were carried over, and naturally changed as the context for them changed. The Temple of Mythal is a good example. Beyond that, I’ll leave it to your imagination," he adds
