The studio made a mistake and made things tougher

Destiny developer Bungie confirms that it's made the Winter's Run strike in the multiplayer game a bit harder to complete due to a glitch, as it was never an intention to make things tougher for fans. However, given that the community got used to the complexity, there aren't any plans to fix it.

Destiny came out back in September of last year and developer Bungie made quite a big deal about the different mechanics that power its multiplayer shooter and how it can implement changes for the online experience easily and without the need for major updates.

While the studio used these features to make plenty of tweaks to the game over the last few months, it's also made some unexpected changes relating to the difficulty of certain quests, strikes, or raids. More specifically, the Winter's Run strike got significantly tougher with the latest update, despite Bungie not saying anything about this pretty big tweak.

The tougher difficulty wasn't intended, Bungie confirms

Now, as part of the latest blog update, Bungie confirms that such a change wasn't intentional. According to Design Lead M.E. Chung, the studio uses a tiered development mode that splits Destiny into different branches, for short- and long-term changes.

In regards to Winter's Run, a few short- and long-term changes came together and produced an unexpected result, so that's why the increase in difficulty wasn't noted by Bungie, as not even the developer knew about this repercussion.

"A few people worked on various experiments trying to improve the strike experience in one of the branches. We decided not to take any of these fixes because it felt too chastising for players. We reverted these changes very early on. Apparently, we didn’t catch them all and one made its way through the branches. It’s never our intention to stealth fix anything in the game," the developer mentions.

Seeing as how the Destiny community has already come up with workarounds to overcome the tougher portions, there's no fix for Winter's Run in the mix, so don't expect fewer or less difficult enemies.
