Dell launched just a few days ago an IoT Gateway powered by Ubuntu Core, and it looks like it's already being tested to demonstrate how it can be used to run the smart buildings of the future.

The Internet of Things is a relatively new concept that explains the fact the many of the things that surround us are actually connected to the Internet and can be governed in a centralized manner. Michael Dell, the founder of Dell, says that IoT is a trillion dollar market, so it's not really surprising that everyone wants a piece. In the case of Dell, the company is looking at IoT from a hardware point of view, and one of the software partners is Canonical with its Ubuntu operating system.

In fact, Canonical is already ahead of the game with Ubuntu Core, which has already been adopted by numerous other companies and developers to run various devices and technologies that wouldn't be otherwise considered, like a fridge, for example. The interesting thing is that IoT is not limited to small devices, and it looks like Ubuntu Core can also be a good manager for smart building, a concept that is sure to catch on in the next few years.

Dell and Ubuntu make a good pair

A short post made on one of the many Twitter accounts for Dell shows off their latest IoT Gateway working with Ubuntu to run a smart building. It's just a proof of concept, but its shows that the IoT Gateway, which we talked about at length in a previous article, and the Ubuntu system make a really good team.

It's very clear that the Internet of Things is becoming more and more important in our society, and very soon most of the stuff that we take for granted will probably be connected online. It's also very likely that many of them will be controlled with the help of Ubuntu.
