Dell is making a push to enter the Internet of Things ecosystem, and it's doing so with a new device aptly named Dell IoT Gateway, which is powered by Ubuntu Core, among other things.

The Internet of Things is a new concept that underlines the fact that many of today's electronics are connected online and with access to the Internet, even if it's just a fridge or a thermostat. All of these new devices can be managed, and there is a lot of competition as to what operating system should be doing the managing.

Numerous companies are now offering solutions for IoT (Internet of Things), and Canonical is one of the most important ones with their Ubuntu Core. The company already has a head start because they have been making the Ubuntu OS for more than a decade, and they know already what they need to do. The competition is tight, and many other companies see the potential of this new market.

Dell is becoming a lot more Linux friendly

It's not a secret that Dell and Ubuntu have a long-standing working partnership, and that partnership provided some tangible results in the past few weeks. Now, Dell is making a move into IoT territory, and they are also using Ubuntu to make it happen.

"Dell IoT gateways bring the power of analytics to the edge of the network, reducing the time and cost associated with transferring non-essential data to the cloud. A perfect launch point for developing IoT applications and compatible with multiple operating systems including Wind River Linux, Ubuntu and Microsoft Windows Embedded. Small in size and powered by a dual-core Intel Celeron processor, is capable of driving a wide range of IoT applications including building and industrial automation," reads the announcement from Dell.

The Dell IoT Gateway is a Wyse 3290 terminal with 1.6GHz Intel Celeron N2807 processor, 4GB of memory, 16GB of storage, and all the network connections you would need, with both cable and Wi-Fi.
