Arne Exton had the pleasure of informing Softpedia earlier today, March 29, about the immediate availability for download of a new build (150329) of his DebEX Barebone computer operating system derived from the upcoming Debian GNU/Linux 8 Jessie distribution and built around the recently released Xfce 4.12 desktop environment.

DebEX Barebone build 150329 is now based on the upstream Debian 8 Jessie repositories as of March 29, 2015, uses a special, optimized Linux 3.18.0-8-exton kernel based on the upstream Linux kernel 3.18.1 LTS, includes the legacy Nvidia 340.65 proprietary video driver, and uses Xfce 4.12 as the default desktop environment.

“A new version of DebEX Barebone with Xfce 4.12 and kernel 3.18.0-8-exton (equivalent to Kernel.org’s stable kernel 3.18.1) is ready. I have installed Nvidia’s proprietary graphic driver 340.65. All packages have been updated to the latest version as of March 29, 2015,” says Arne Exton in an email to Softpedia.

Three editions of DebEX are available at the moment on Softpedia

Besides the DebEX Barebone with Xfce, Arne Exton provides two more editions, DebEX KDE and DebEX GNOME. All DebEX editions are based on the upcoming Debian 8 Jessie operating system, but some elements from Debian Sid (unstable) are also used. DebEX KDE is built around KDE Apps 4.14.3 and KDE Plasma 5, and DebEX GNOME uses GNOME 3.14.

While both DebEX Barebone and DebEX GNOME use the same special Linux kernel 3.18.0-8-exton, the DebEX KDE edition is powered by an optimized Linux kernel 3.19.0-5-exton, based on the upstream Linux 3.19.0 kernel. You can download DebEX Barebone 150329, as well as the other two editions, right now from Softpedia. Please note that the distribution is supported only on 64-bit computers.
