14 DAY TRIAL // Bandai Namco, the publisher of the upcoming Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin edition of the challenging RPG, confirms that PC DirectX 9, PS3, or Xbox 360 owners of the title won't be able to play alongside those who get it on PC for DirectX 11, as well as on PS4 or Xbox One.
Dark Souls 2 launched back in 2014 for the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360 platforms. Since then, developer From Software and publisher Bandai Namco have released several DLC expansions, not to mention many updates for the actual title.
Soon afterwards, it was revealed that Dark Souls 2 would get a re-release called Scholar of the First Sin, which would include all the add-ons, not to mention other enhancements, and that, besides the PC, PS3, and Xbox 360, it would also appear on the PS4 and Xbox One, not to mention on the PC with support for DirectX 11.
No cross-gen multiplayer for Scholar of the First Sin
Now, Bandai Namco confirms on the official website that those who get Scholar of the First Sin on PC for DirectX 9, as well as on PS3 or Xbox 360, won't be able to play online with those who get the game for the PC on DirectX 11 or on the PS4 or Xbox One.
Apparently, there are quite a few technical differences between these versions of Dark Souls 2, despite the fact that, in terms of content, they're identical. Among the key differences are spawning places for enemies, item locations, and various other environmental tweaks.
"The difference in the DirectX11, Xbox One, and PS4 versions of Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin pertaining to where enemies spawn, items are located, and other environmental differences will not allow players running newer hardware versions to connect and interact with players experiencing the game on older hardware running DirectX9, Xbox 360, and PS3," the publisher says.
Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin launches in April, so expect a few more details until then.
