Owners of the game will have to repurchase the new version

From Software announced in late November that it would launch a Director’s Cut Edition of the Dark Souls II for PC, PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360, but also for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Currently, the game is not available on next-generation consoles, which is why the new version of Dark Souls 2 is very important for the console gaming community.

Dubbed Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin, the game has been confirmed for release on April 7, 2015 on PC and all the console platforms mentioned earlier.

The contents of this version of the game that acts like a Director’s Cut Edition are plenty and some of them will be implemented for free into the DirectX 9 version of Dark Souls 2.

According to From Software, existing owners will get a special update called Patch 1.10, which will add new stuff, but not everything that’s been implemented into Scholar of the First Sin.

Patch 1.10 is expected to drop on all platforms on February 5, 2015

Here is what Chris Gilbert, senior vice president of Sales and Marketing for Bandai Namco, had to say about the upcoming re-release: “With Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin Edition, From Software is inviting players back to the kingdom of Drangleic to experience its improved gameplay mechanics, gorgeous next-gen graphics, and uncover new unknown dangers and lore.”

From Software also mentioned that current Dark Souls 2 owners would receive a new NPC and a fresh quest via patch 1.10. An expanded story, new in-game events, improved balance, as well as better online matchmaking will be included in the free patch as well.

However, here is what existing Dark Souls 2 owners will not receive in the upcoming patch 1.10, which is supposed to arrive on February 5, 2015. Unfortunately, you don’t get everything for free even if you own the game.

So, according to an official chart released by From Software and uncovered by Foxeo Games, existing Dark Souls 2 owners will not get any enhanced visuals or multiplayer. Moreover, there will be no enemy and game design modifications included in the free patch.

Dark Souls 2 community will be split into two, depending on which version they own

But there’s more to this, as From Software seems to have decided to split the Dark Souls 2 community in two. There will be separate servers for those who own Scholar of the First Sin Edition and those who own the older version.

This means that if your friend owns the DirectX 9 version, then he/she will not be able to play with you if you buy the DirectX 11 version, Scholar of the First Sin.

According to the same chart, Dark Souls 2: Scholar of the First Sin Edition will include all three DLCs that are part of the Season Pass and it will cost like a brand new game.

This means that if you want the visual improvements and the option to play with your friends, as well as other important enhancements, then you will have to repurchase the game for full price, that’s around $50-$60 for console owners or $45-$50 for PC gamers.

That seems a bit of unfair for those who already purchased Dark Souls 2 and the Season Pass. This does makes sense for owners of next-generation consoles, but if the rest of the info proves to be accurate it’s clearly a mistake from From Software’s part.
