DG2: Defense Grid 2, the sequel to one of the best tower defense games ever made, has been released on Linux, but with a small caveat.

The developers from Hidden Path Entertainment managed to have the Linux release done in time for the official launch, but there is a small problem. Both the Linux and Mac versions of the game are not quite finished yet and they require some more work.

"When you purchase Defense Grid 2 on Steam, your key works for Windows, Mac, and SteamOS/Linux. If you wish to check out the SteamOS & Mac versions prior to October 14th, you will receive access to early-but-not-complete versions of Defense Grid 2 that are lower in performance than the final game will be, and which still have some bugs and issues that will be updated and resolved in time for an October 14th ship.

"We apologize for not having all 5 platforms that we targeted ready for September 23rd, but Mac and SteamOS are very close and will be final soon," reads the announcement posted on Steam.

This is somewhat of a premiere for a Linux launch on Steam, but users have to admire the sincerity of the developers. So, if you happen to have bought DG2: Defense Grid 2 for Linux, remember that the official release for this platform is October 14.
