Crytek announced a while ago that it was working on the CryEngine for the Linux platform, but little information has been made available since then. Now, it looks like they are finally ready to share some news about the engine during the upcoming GDC 2015 event.

GDC 2015 is a games convention that focuses more on the technical aspects of things. Games are still promoted and announced, but there is also plenty of information about gaming engines and upcoming hardware projects. As you can imagine, a lot of people are waiting to see what Crytek will do with the Linux platform and GDC is the perfect avenue.

On the other hand, Crytek had some financial problems recently and it's unclear just how much effort the company is willing to invest in a new operating system that has so far been backed by quite a few developers, hardware makers, and Valve. Linux still has a long way to go, but the fact that big names like Crytek are willing to provide support is a very positive thing.

CryEngine for Linux will be shown at GDC 2015

Users and gamers tend to think that Linux is not a capable gaming platform, but it's home for some pretty big games that require a lot of hardware power. Granted, there is still a lot of work for the improvements of the drivers and the rest of core components, but it's happening as we speak.

"Crytek will set up base at booth #1424 in the South Hall of the Moscone Center, where attendees will be able to take a closer look at a brand new VR demo powered by CRYENGINE and witness Crytek's technology at work on Android-based systems. On top of seeing CRYENGINE unleashed for VR and Android, visitors can discover how the engine is equipping developers on PlayStation®4, Xbox One and Linux, and learn more about CRYENGINE Sandbox – the ultimate multiplatform toolset," reads the official entry on their website.

As you can see, Linux is mentioned in the same breath with Xbox One and Playstation 4, which is something that few of us expected to see so soon. GDC 2015 will take place March 4 - 6, 2015.
