The Linux community will definitely feel the loss

We're sad to inform you that Marco Pesenti Gritti, the creator of Epiphany and Evince, has passed away. He will be missed in the Linux community.

We often talk about Linux developers, but we often forget that they are also human and have the same problems as everyone else. The Linux community is a very big one, and sad news like the one we're sharing today is not a singular event. It's unfortunate that we only get to talk about people and their accomplishments after they've passed, but it's never too late.

Marco Pesenti Gritti released the first version of Epiphany back in 2002, and the application has evolved a lot since then. The name has been changed to Web a while back, but Epiphany's core has remained the same. It's a Web browser that's part of the GNOME stack, and it's integrated by default in numerous distros.

Evince is a document viewer, and it's an extremely useful application, although it's mostly used as PDF reader. It's also part of the GNOME stack, but users will find it installed by default in dozens of active Linux distros, such as Ubuntu, Fedora, or Linux Mint. It's a good app, fast, and easy to use.

You will be missed, Marco

"The GNOME project is sad to have learnt that Marco Pesenti Gritti recently passed away after a long fight with cancer. Marco made major contributions to GNOME, having been the original author of both the Epiphany (also known as “Web”) browser and Evince, the GNOME PDF reader. Besides his significant contributions and technical ability, Marco was known as a good friend who served as an inspiration to many within the community," noted his fellow devs on the GNOME website.

Marco’s legacy in the Linux world will live on, and maybe some of us will remember him when we open a webpage with Epiphany and a PDF file with Evince.
