Just days ago, a couple from Madrid, Spain, tied the knot in a fairly bizarre ceremony. Long story short, Nicolas and Alexandra got married underwater, and they say they could not be happier about their decision to get hitched in such a unique way.

The ceremony, organized by a dive club dubbed Top Dive, was held in the waters off the coast of French Polynesia. Apart from a priest, the only person who witnessed the event was a photographer.

The details of this bizarre wedding

It is understood that the ceremony was held in the lagoon of Bora Bora, one of the islands that comprise French Polynesia, at a depth of about 4 meters (a little over 13 feet). The bride and groom both wore white.

Seeing how the ceremony only lasted about 20 minutes, Nicolas and Alexandra weren't sent to the bottom of Bora Bora's lagoon carrying oxygen tanks on their backs. Instead, they wore special helmets that allowed them to breathe fresh air from the surface of the water.

Not at all surprisingly, there are many who say that the helmets and the diving suits that they put on for this special occasion made Nicolas and Alexandra look less like newlyweds and more like astronauts getting ready to explore some distant planet.

The ceremony was held by a priest who wedded the couple from behind an altar made of pearls. When the time came for Nicolas and Alexandra to say “I do,” they settled for giving a thumbs up. An underwater photographer captured the moment on camera.

Once the ceremony was completed and the love birds were officially husband and wife, they were taken to shore aboard a canoe. While on their way back to land, they drank champagne and listened to music. Romantic music sang by the same priest who married them, to be more precise.

A one-of-a-kind underwater wedding

As mentioned, this ceremony was organized by a dive club. By the looks of it, it was the first underwater wedding to have until now been organized in Bora Bora's lagoon.

According to Daily Mail, the wedding cost Nicolas and Alexandra some €2,700 (approximately $3,380). The newlyweds say that the experience was well worth the money, and that they are happy to have been the first couple to have until now tied the knot in the waters off the coast of Bora Bora.

“I guess it's like walking for the first time on the moon,” groom Nicolas commented on this one-of-a-kind experience in a recent interview with the press.
