The famous Cossacks RTS series is returning after a decade, and it will be released as a Linux title as well. It's being developed by the same studio that made the original games, GSC Game World.

Not many people remember that GSC Game World has been around for a long time, and they've done more than just the S.T.A.L.K.E.R. series of games. Some of their work includes all the Cossacks titles, an FPS called Codename: Outbreak and American Conquest. As you can see, their pedigree is not exactly what you might expect.

To top things off, GSC Game World also had some financial problems and lost many of its developers to other studios, such as 4A Games (Metro 2033 series). They were gone for more than a year, and before that they said they were working on a new S.T.A.L.K.E.R. title. It turns out that they've revived Cossacks, and they already have something to show for it.

The Cossacks RTS redefined the RTS genre

GSC Game World was not the inventor of the RTS concept, but they took it to another level. They managed to provide relative historically accurate battles, and they managed to fill the screen with units. Cossacks: European Wars and all the others that followed provided players with the option of controlling tens of thousands of units in one battle, something that was never done before.

"Each soldier on the battlefield is a separate unit with its own AI, life and combat parameters. In the majority of RTS games, units are joined into squads and it is possible to take command only over those groups. In Cossacks 3 it is possible to control each individual soldier separately, or to unite them into squads for convenience. Single soldiers and small groups are useful for scouting or capturing enemy’s peasants, buildings and artillery," said Valentine Yeltyshev from GSC in a huge interview on polygon.com.

Valentine Yeltyshe also confirmed that Cossacks 3 would arrive on Linux, Windows, and Mac OS X although there is no launch date attached to the project.
