This is one of the strangest displays ever made

Most monitors and TVs have the 16:9 aspect ratio, with a few models using the 5:4 or 4:3, depending on what they're for and how adventurous their designers feel.

I've rarely seen a completely square display though. Actually, I don't remember ever seeing one, definitely not a monitor or TV with the 1:1 aspect ratio.

And yet EIZO has decided to release just such a thing. So, without further ado, behold the FlexScan EV2730Q 26.5-inch LCD monitor.

With a resolution of 1920 x 1920 pixels, it has 78% more pixels than a 1920 x 1080 pixels screen.

The point was to allow long windows to fit on the same screen and remove the need to scroll all the time, especially when viewing a virtual book page, message board, or new website.

More importantly, it will make the use of CAD and photo editing programs a lot smoother, since it will provide a much better overall view with less zooming required.

Color-wise, you get to choose between sRGB, Movie, Paper, and two modes with settings you set yourself. Wide dimming range even lets you adjust the backlight, all the way down to 1% of the top brightness for when there's little or no light, like in the evenings or at night.

Finally, EIZO implemented the EcoView Sense 2 technology, which switches the screen to power save mode when you leave the chair.

The full specs (like the USB hub, speakers, and overdrive circuit) are detailed in the FlexScan EV2730Q product page.
