Alessio Fattorini has announced recently that the first Release Candidate (RC) version of its forthcoming server-oriented and open-source Linux kernel-based computer operating system, NethServer 6.6, is available for download and testing. NethServer is derived from CentOS, a Red Hat Enterprise Linux derivative.

According to the official release notes, NethServer 6.6 RC1 now supports Delta RPM packages directly from CentOS’ mirrors, adds various packages (traceroute, bind-utils, tmpwatch) aimed at helping users with troubleshooting, renames the package manager to Software center and moves it into the Administration section. Also, Phone Home has been added to collect limited usage statistics.

The first Release Candidate version of NethServer 6.6 introduces the Dashboard Disk Analyzer tool, no longer synchronizes the admin and root passwords, which means that the default login will be root. In addition, it removes the AdminIsNotRoot DB key, and will automatically create the admin user with a separate password when nethserver-directory RPM is installed.

The ISO image has been revised in this Release Candidate edition

The installable-only ISO image has been revised in NethServer 6.6 Release Candidate 1, which also adds a new page in the Administration section, called Server certificate, displaying self-signed SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) certificates and allowing users to generate new ones or customize the alternative names of the server.

Additionally, the YUM presto plugin has also been installed by default in order to make the update process a lot faster. Port 25 will now be automatically blocked from blue and green zones when the nethserver-firewall-base and nethserver-mail-filter both packages are installed, and the Remote access page has been removed from this release.

Download NethServer 6.6 RC1 right now from Softpedia. We remind everyone who downloads this operating system that it needs to be installed (read: not a Live CD). Also, please keep in mind that the distribution is not stable enough to be deployed on production systems. More details about NethServer 6.6 RC1 can be found in the release announcement page.
