Activision’s free-to-play Call of Duty Online has just opened its servers in China. Announced a few years ago, the game has now been launched in public open beta for the millions of Chinese gamers, fans of the shooter genre.

The game has been developed by veteran Call of Duty studio Raven Software, and as the name suggests, it’s been inspired from the original game.

“Millions of gamers in the West have come to appreciate that white-knuckled, epic thrill-ride that only Call of Duty delivers. And now an entire new audience of gamers will experience this for the first time. We believe Call of Duty Online is going to be a game-changer for Chinese gamers,” said Eric Hirshberg, CEO of Activision Publishing.

Call of Duty Online has been released in China in partnership with Tencent. The free-to-play game allows players to rent or purchase in-game items.

The game comes with multiple modes for single and multiplayer experiences

But Call of Duty Online isn’t exclusively a multiplayer game. Activision confirmed that the game would also feature Hero Ops single-player campaign missions.

In addition, Call of Duty Online will include Survival Mode cooperative experiences, the usual multiplayer mode and the newly developed Cyborgs (PvE modes exclusive to the Chinese market).

"Since announcing Call of Duty Online, we have gone through a series of alpha and closed beta tests, with each test generating incredibly positive results. Call of Duty Online is a top tier game developed by an elite team and we are honored to bring this highly anticipated title to the Chinese players,” said Steven Ma, senior vice president of Tencent.

Call of Duty Online makes use of some of the maps, character models and weapons from a few other games in the franchise, such as Modern Warfare and Black Ops. Later on, the game will receive new content reused from Call of Duty Ghosts and Advanced Warfare.
