Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 is now official and quite a lot of details concerning its story campaign are available, alongside information about how it supports 4-player cooperative gameplay right from the get-go.

Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 was confirmed earlier this month and yesterday it got its full-fledged reveal, thanks to a trailer and quite a lot of interesting information from publisher Activision and developer Treyarch.

The story campaign supports 4-player co-op

Now, the studio is sharing more details about specific aspects of the game, starting with the story campaign that supports up to four players through its cooperative mode.

The studio confirms to Polygon that the plot takes place 35 years after the events of Black Ops 2, so there is still a connection to the past titles in the series. However, the sci-fi gadgets have drastically evolved in the meantime, thanks to a new Direct Neural Interface system that allows soldiers to have complete control over their bodies and, more importantly, over their different cybernetic implants and even limbs.

This trend of augmentation plays a big role in the conflict, but Treyarch declined to say anything else about the actual plot.

Even so, players will have great freedom when it comes to using and collecting their powers, called cyber cores, and they can be combined to offer even more versatility than the exo suit seen in Call of Duty: Advanced Warfare last year.

Players have great freedom during the campaign

The four players supported by the campaign will have a lot of freedom when it comes to traversing the battlefield, as areas are envisioned as wide, open zones fit for different routes and various ways of engaging the enemy. Those who play alone, however, can still spot more linear routes that keep things from becoming too tedious.

In order to better support this open design perspective, Treyarch came up with new animations, a new AI, and a variety of other mechanics.

You can expect to hear more in the near future, as we get closer to the release of Call of Duty: Black Ops 3 on PC, PS4, and Xbox One on November 6.
